MWG & Muse Receptor

50481"Many of the plugins I use are offloaded from my host computer and run on a Muse Receptor. This is a clever system that runs VST instruments and effects on its own and interconnects with the DAW via Ethernet, and as such can be taken with me if I do some work in another studio. It can be directly controlled from the host computer and the VST instruments and effects can be dropped into the DAW (Logic or ProTools) as if they were plugins running on the host. I used this on many of the tracks on I Can See from Here, and it enabled me to work on them in a number of locations with the DAW on a laptop. As with the various software tools I do not formally endorse the system, but it is a very useful studio tool itself and I would not hesitate to recommend it to someone looking to increase their flexibility."

New Album Features Collaboration

kaukonen_gilbert Michael William Gilbert's new CD, I Can See from Here, is his first release of entirely new music in almost 10 years. It is a stunning combination of jazz, folk, electronic soundscape, world music, and electro-acoustic ambience. It features a collaboration piece with guest guitarist Peter Kaukonen, San Francisco Bay Area guitarist, who has played, toured, and recorded with Black Kangaroo,  Jefferson Airplane,  Jefferson Starship,  and Johnny Winter.

The piece, "Amerikan Dream", reflects the attitudes and thoughts of both musicians towards the complexities and contradictions in contemporary life, and features Kaukonen's virtuosic guitar soli and obbligato intertwined with Gilbert's fantastical sonic textures.

MWG Studio Tools

studio"People sometimes like to ask me what instruments or effects I use on my projects. I have always been reluctant to go into this, not because it's at all a secret, but more because people tend to over-focus on the tools rather than on the sounds and sonic landscapes themselves. Having said that, I thought I would share what I actually used on I Can See from Here. I do not formally endorse these as products, but they are all excellent studio tools each in their own ways, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to a friend or colleague."

Apple Logic Studio 8 & 9; Arturia Moog Modular & ARP 2600; Crysonic Sindo v3; Garritan Personal Orchestra; GMedia M-Tron; Heavyocity Evolve; IK Miroslav Philharmonic & TRackS3 EQ & ARC Room Correction; iZotope Ozone 4; Modartt Pianoteq; Native Instruments Komplete 5; Spectrasonics Atmosphere; Nomad D82 Sonic Maximizer; PSP Vintage Warmer2; Toontrack EZdrummer; WaveArts Power Suite 5; and 112db Redline Monitor.

Add to this a small assortment of percussion toys and instruments, and, of course, Peter Kaukonen's wonderful guitars!
